Course Overview
This course takes a focused look at the construction drawings at the core of a heavy civil plan set: street and storm water plan and profile sheets and utility plans. Building on foundational plan set navigation skills, this course equips professionals with the ability to read the documents that drive daily field operations, the sheets that define where pipe goes, at what elevation, and how surveyors verify it was installed correctly. Using the Everhart Road reconstruction project in Corpus Christi, Texas, as a real-world case study, participants will learn to extract profile grades, interpret call outs, track revisions, and navigate the utility sections covering water lines, storm drain, wastewater, IT conduit, and gas. Taught from the perspective of Zach Frye, an experienced survey manager with JE Construction Services, this course bridges classroom learning and real-world field conditions.

Understand the plan and profile sheet format and interpret both the plan view and the profile view.
Read stationing, apply right/left offset conventions, and locate features along the alignment.
Extract top of curb and flow line elevations from call outs and cross-check them against the profile graph.
Calculate slope percentage from call outs and verify it independently using the profile view.
Identify red lines, revision clouds, and revision triangles, and confirm use of the current plan version.
Read storm lateral and waterline lateral sheets for pipe sizes, bends, and top-of-pipe elevations.
Navigate intersection plans, curb ramp detail sheets, and parking lot plans.
Interpret water line, wastewater, IT conduit, and gas line plan and profile sheets.
Recognize the survey manager's role in laying out, staking, and verifying utility installations in the field.
