Course Overview

This continuing education course examines how education and outreach at every level can introduce the profession to students who have never heard of it, using the Point of Beginning Initiative and the Geospatial Engineering and Land Surveying (GELS) Program of Study as a working models.

Across the course, you will review the workforce data behind the shortage, walk through how the GELS program was designed and approved within the Texas Education Agency's CTE system, and examine how industry certifications, dual credit, and industry partnership fit together into a coherent pathway.

The course closes with practical outreach strategies you can use as your own point of beginning when approaching a district, a counselor, or a classroom in your region. Interviews with the CTE director, the teachers who run the classroom, the industry partners who show up on Friday afternoons, and the students themselves run throughout, so you hear how the work was actually done rather than how it looks on paper.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, you will be able to:

1   Describe the current condition of the surveying and geomatics workforce and identify where the education system stops producing candidates for it.

2   Explain how a geospatial CTE program of study is built and sustained in Texas, including TEA approval, industry-based certifications, postsecondary articulation, classroom instruction, and industry partnership.

3   Select outreach strategies matched to a specific audience, from elementary students through universities, community groups, and professional organizations.

4   Identify a realistic point of entry for outreach work based on your own availability, professional network, and region.
